Obscured Vision

Snow is beautiful, they say. It is, I say, when you are sheltered. Not so much when you unsuspectingly leave your class room and are ambushed by its snow soldiers. Within minutes they have covered the ground. They are everywhere. You can barely hold your eyes open against their chaos. You fight your way through while the cold infiltrates your every fibre, trying to corrupt you. Every last inch of your skin you are desperately protecting, but their icy stabs reach through your appropriated armor of jumpers and tights. With crystal weapons they cling onto everything they can grasp and when missing their aim, they transform. Sneakily they turn your own body heat against you, use it to soak your clothes. The damage is so lasting that not for days you will want to approach your drenched coat. Every familiar path they have turned into an obstacle, booby trapping every single one of your safe routes. The tracks of your companions vanish within minutes. If you get left behind, you stay left behind.

If you somehow find your way back to camp, panting, your body cannot decide to feel heat or cold. Your fingers don’t feel at all, and your cheeks are frozen porcelain. The cold has cut into your throat with every breath – the very essence of living has been made painful. You taste iron and wonder if your lip has split again. Your ears are stinging like they themselves are knives poking into your head. Why have you not called in the onion healers? Because you know the rest in which you must deal with your agonies is short lived. Not long before you are called again to march out, brave the white once again, aware of the dangers that lie within it, but mindful of your duties.

Is this what you call beautiful? No, of course it isn’t. All that has touched your green nose is snow in the calm. After the battle when it builds a thick blanket over the battle field. Innocent like it arrived after the harm was done. It glistens to work its way into our minds, win over our love and admiration. It tries to cover our memories with that same blanket, when in truth it is only obscuring its own monstrosities. Hiding away the single soldiers in a unified whole to make you forget the pain they caused you. You mustn’t forget! For even when we have gathered our forces and slowly wear away at that perfect image, snow reveals its last weapon. Its army evolves to cover our paths in mud. Drown our shoes and sputter in all directions to accompany our road to recovery with the sound of its sneering. Drag our supposed victory into hues of grey and clam legs. Supposed? That’s right. Because one can never know when the white sky begins to fall again. When those gates open quietly, before unleashing their full power once more without warning. Our scars are still pink when we are forced to defend our lives again. You didn’t chose war? None of us did, kid, but whatever you see, you must know snow soldiers are the most cold blooded killers in all the realms.
